“It’s funny because it’s true.” – Homer Simpson
Homer Simpson was at a higher level of consciousness than Frank Grimes.
For something to be funny it usually has to be true or out of this world ridiculous.
The joke has to be said with a tone that makes it funny. Vocabulary that is unusual makes people more likely to laugh.
“So I kicked this guy….right on the side of his body. BOOM out the drivers side bus window he went.”
– Buddy from work talking about an altercation he was in against a bus driver.
Using the term “right on the side of his body” is what made that funny. If you saw the actual video of this guys rant you would die laughing.
A decade ago I was watching the 2010 NHL Stanley Cup Final and the Hawks won the cup. Hawks forward Adam Burish said in a post game interview,
“I’m gonna punch that Chris Pronger next time I play him”.
Pronger said in response “well where’s that gonna happen, the minors?”
I pissed my pants laughing because it was a clever re-frame from Pronger of all people that humiliated Burish and it was very true.
Burish was a fringe NHL’er.
Pronger was a guy that didn’t give a fuck, and to be funny, it’s important to not care if your joke bombs or not. The way pronger said it killed me. …..Well…where’s that?…The Minors…???
The way you say something means more than what you say. I make my buddies laugh because of my reactions to their jokes on me.
One time in the locker room my hockey team was insulting me and I said….”Hey listen, if you don’t fuck off, I’mma tell you to fuck off again.”
To this day people still remember that one.
To be able to come up with funny one-liners, you have to have a sense of what is true and funny at the same time.
Men insult each other all the time and don’t really mean it. Women compliment each-other all the time and don’t really mean it.
My best friends convince other people who don’t know my age that I’m 35-45 all the time.
I went with my friends to the casino and buddy said that I could be their dad. I took that in stride.
I know how to have a sense of humor about myself and I take things in stride. I’m not self-deprecating and I’m actually more self-absorbed than anything because I want to be the big guru.
I have a healthy balance of being seriously funny.
I’m in a higher state because I find humor in many things. I know when to put a lid on it and respect people as well.
I find it funny that most people who flip the bird at traffic on the highway are more enlightened than most of those serious guru’s out there.
Life is a video game, and this means you should have fun while you play it.
Once when I was in nirvana while in a manic phase, I saw the people around me living lives of quiet desperation.
The more serious you are, the more asleep you are. The less fucks you give, the more fucks you get.
Or to put it another way, the less you care about things you have no control over, the more life will arrange those areas for your betterment.
Its key to see that God has a sense of humor in this divine movie we are making together.
Being serious means you can’t laugh or make people laugh.
We can find serious people in psych wards, as they get better one of the signs is that they can laugh and not be so serious.
In my group of buddies we crack jokes all the time.
References are also a good way to make people laugh.
I saw a pink moped one summer while in the car with my buddies, so I said “that must be Tommy Vercetti.”
The reference was nostalgic and funny at the same time.
The car burst out laughing because it was a joke referring to GTA vice-city.
The joke was said in 2018 and the reference was from 2003. That’s what made it funny because nobody would think about it like that.
Another joke I cracked was about a buddy who I loved to roast, first I watched his hockey and he was struggling to make moves and get better.
So being the savage that I am, I said “you know what to do, but you don’t know how to do it.”
Buddy pissed his pants and the guy I insulted was so pissed off because he had too much ego to laugh at himself. He got defensive which made it funnier for the group.
Keeping a sense of humor about yourself is a major strength when you are with other men.
When dating women it’s also good to be able to take things in stride. Own your mistakes and keep moving forward.
The re-frame is a great way to insult someone back (all in good fun) or agree and amplify to show you are laid back and don’t give a shit about what other people think.
The guy who can’t take a joke and appreciate humor is the guy who is stuck in lower states.
Another way I used to express humor is to commentate hockey while playing NHL with friends on my xbox and say things like, “and Sid is dumped to his ass”, or “fucking Jimmy Howard can’t make a save.” The unprofessionalism and blatant swearing about the play from a wanna be NHL broadcaster made it funny.
The ability to laugh indicates higher consciousness.
Connor McGregor is highly conscious, sure he has a big ego and a big mouth, but ego is actually a strength.
Robin Williams was one of the greatest entertainers of all time and he could think of the funniest things because he was either in super high or low states.
I have manic-depression which allows me to come up with funny statements without much effort. I have a gift for seeing contrast because of bipolar. I use this to make light of serious things.
When my mood is above the equator I’m very funny.
Being too serious indicates that I’m at a low point or state of being.
Affirmations and visualizations that are funny will have more manifesting power than neutral ones.
Without being able to laugh or listen to music life would be a mistake.
If you want a Lamborghini visualize driving 200MPH and getting a $10,000 speeding ticket and spitting in the cops face.
Picture yourself going into your $10,000,000 account to get the car out of the impound and then going to the insurance company and hearing that your premium is now 7K a month.
Picture your billionaire self going to the casino and playing $1-2NL and bullying the table. Make the raises $75 to go. Piss them off, crack their aces with 7-2o.
Make the raises and break the aces!
Until next time,
Angus Baynham-McColl
